Wrong and Correct Expression
Here are some incorrect expressions, like “Aのほうがいちばん〜です” and “AとBでは、どちらがいちばん～ですか？”
Wrong: ピザのほうがいちばん好きです。
Correct: ピザがいちばん好きです。
English: I like pizza best.
Wrong: 日本料理では、すしのほうがいちばん人気です。
Correct: 日本料理では、すしがいちばん人気です。
English: Sushi is the most popular Japanese dish.
In these examples, the “〜のほうが” part is wrong. Although “〜のほうが” is an expression of comparison, it is wrong to use both “〜がいちばん” and “〜のほうが” and “〜がいちばん” is the appropriate expression in this context.
Wrong: 英語と日本語では、どちらがいちばん上手ですか？
Correct: 英語と日本語と中国語では、どちらがいちばん上手ですか？
English: Which do you speak best, English, Japanese or Chinese?
Correct: 英語と日本語では、どちらが上手ですか？
English: Which do you speak better, English or Japanese?
Wrong: 野球とサッカーでは、野球がいちばん好きです。
Correct: 野球とサッカーでは、野球が好きです。
English: I prefer baseball to soccer.
Correct: 野球とサッカーとテニスでは、野球がいちばん好きです。
English: Between baseball, soccer and tennis, I like baseball the best.
If you are comparing just two things, “English” and “Japanese” or “baseball” and “soccer,” you can just say, “どちらが上手ですか？” or “〜が好きです” without “いちばん”.
If you want to use “いちばん”, you should use three or more things to compare.
