Whether you want to say why you are late, why you like something, or why you can’t do something, ~ので is essential for daily conversations.
By mastering this grammar, you’ll sound more natural and polite in Japanese.
Main Lesson: Understanding ~ので
Meaning
~ので means “because” or “since.” It is used to explain the reason for something in a sentence.
Usually, から and ~ので can be used with the same meaning, but ~ので sounds softer.
Example: Both sentences are correct and have the same meaning.
ねむいから、はやくねます。
(Nemui kara, hayaku nemasu.)
ねむいので、はやくねます。
(Nemui node, hayaku nemasu.)
Structure
Verb + ので
Present tense:
いそがしい ので、いきません。
(Isogashii node, ikimasen.)
– “Since I’m busy, I won’t go.”
い-adjective + ので
さむいので、コートをきます。
(Samui node, kōto wo kimasu.)
– “Because it is cold, I will wear a coat.”
な-adjective + なので
しずか なので、よく べんきょう できます。
(Shizuka na node, yoku benkyou dekimasu.)
– “Since it is quiet, I can study well.”
Noun + なので
じかん なので、はやく いきます。
(Jikan na node, hayaku ikimasu.)
– “Because it is time, I will go early.”
Pronunciation & Key Notes
な-adjectives and nouns need なので.
Can be used in questions or statements:
なぜ おくれましたか？ → ねむかったので、おくれました。
(Why were you late? → Since I was sleepy, I was late.)

(Because I don’t have a handkerchief, I use a tissue.)

ネクタイ が よごれた ので、あたらしい の を つけます。

ひま なので、しんぶん を よみます。
