Hello! Welcome to Day 18 of your Japanese learning journey!
Today, we’re learning how to use する (suru) to talk about actions, like studying or eating. This is great for sharing what you do every day with friends. You’re making awesome progress in Japanese!
Keep practicing, and you’ll sound natural soon. Let’s dive into fun words and sentences!
Vocabulary
Japanese | Reading | Meaning |
---|---|---|
する | suru | Do |
べんきょう | benkyou | Study |
たべる | taberu | Eat |
ねる | neru | Sleep |
あるく | aruku | Walk |
はしる | hashiru | Run |
みる | miru | Watch, see |
Grammar Point
The verb する (suru) means “to do” and is used for actions or activities.
For politeness, change する to します (shimasu) in present tense. Use the particle を (o) to mark the action you’re doing.
Japanese | + ます / します | Reading |
---|---|---|
べんきょう | べんきょう を します | benkyou wo shimasu |
たべる | たべます | tabemasu |
ねる | ねます | nemasu |
あるく | あるきます | arukimasu |
はしる | はしります | hashirimasu |
みる | みます | mimasu |
At JLPT N5, you can combine する with nouns (like べんきょう) to describe activities or use basic verbs like たべる or みる with を to talk about actions.
This structure is simple and perfect for daily conversations about what you or others do.
Example Sentences
- わたし は べんきょう する。 (watashi wa benkyou suru.)
- I study.

Practice Activity
Let’s have fun talking about actions! Write six sentences using する (or します) and を to describe what you or others do. Say each sentence aloud to practice pronunciation.
Then, try asking a friend: なに を します か? (nani o shimasu ka?, “What do you do?”) and write their answer in a sentence, like ともだち は えいが を みる.
If you’re alone, imagine a conversation or record yourself. This will help you feel confident talking about daily activities in Japanese!
Conclusion
Great job learning する and を to talk about actions!
You can now say わたし は べんきょう する or ask なに を します か?
Try these with a friend or family member. You’re speaking Japanese so well! Keep practicing, and we’ll learn more tomorrow!
